Review: More Dragonforge – Flying Stands and Big Bases

New stuff!

I’ve just received my latest order from Dragon Forge Design, who I’ve previously bought some small bases and excellent power cables from. This time, I’ve bought two large bases and the flying stand kits for my in-progress Inquisitorial dropship – why two? Well, up to $30 of stuff posts for $6, so I made an exactly $30 order, and also because I wasn’t sure whether I wanted a 6″ or a 12″ flying stand, and I wasn’t sure which base size would be best for the dropship.

As you can see above, I got a bonus in the package – an extra flight stand adapter thingy. Not sure what use it’ll be, but it’s always nice to get extras of anything!

120mm x 95mm Desert Base

Here’s the Valkyrie/40k Flyer sized base, 120mm x 95mm one. That hole is actually in the middle of the base, but the image perspective makes it look off-centre (you’ll just have to trust me on that one). It’s from the Desert line, since I normally base my models with sand, a few detail bits, and flock, so I wanted the texture to match what I normally use for bases.

120mm Round Desert Base

This one’s 120mm diameter (CD sized), and again that hole is actually in the middle of the base. I’ll probably be using this one in conjunction with the 12″ flight stand for the dropship, so it looks like a flyer above the Stormravens and Valkyries of the 40k table. That is assuming I ever actually play Apocalypse again, of course.

The rods (sorry – no pics) aren’t anything special. They’re half an inch in diameter (so, 12.5mm for us metric types) and very sturdy, although probably wouldn’t trust a full Forgeworld resin thunderhawk on one (but smaller things, like thunderbolts, no problem).

It’s a hole!

The flight stand attachments also aren’t that special, but the nice thing is they have just enough detail to make them fit in on the bottom of your model (a part which most people will never look at). One problem is that all the drilled holes are just a bit smaller than the flight rods, which means some sanding or a lot of force is required to fit them into the holes both on the base and the attachment. The depth of the attachment bit is nice, because it means that if you leave it a tiny bit loose so you can remove the flight stand it’s still sturdy enough so that your flyer doesn’t tip over.

Here it is on the dropship…

As a teaser, here’s the flight stand attachment on the bottom of the dropship (it’s not glued yet, just placed into position). Dropship update this weekend, I promise!
