Review: Trumpeter 1:35 German 17cm Ammo (06609) – for 40k

I recently bought the Trumpeter 06609 kit, which is 1:35 scale German 17cm three-part ammo for the K Gr.37 field artillery. This was recommended by Marty_ on Warseer, and it looked good in his pics so I nabbed a pack off ebay to try.

Here’s a quick review:

The kit is relatively good value – for $20, the kit comes with this:

Sprues and brass

Plastic:

12 shells

6 propellant bag cases

6 propellant bags

6 propellant cartridges

Metal:

3 shells

3 propellant cartridges

[Just to explain the bits – the ammo for the K Gr.37 comes in three parts: Shell, base propellant charge in a brass casing, and supplemental charge in a silk bag. The ammo isn’t in one single cartridge as this would make it too long and heavy to man-handle, and the base charge was in a brass casing so that normal breeches could be used as the brass expands to seal the breech, rather than having to build better sealed breeches for bag-only charges such as those used in the 16 inch US battleship guns]

Nearly fits perfectly in a basilisk

The 1:35 17cm ammo is nearly perfect for basilisks – the shell itself nearly (but not quite) fits into the basilisk barrel itself.

It definitely looks the part when combined with 40k Imperial Guard tank crew.

The bits themselves are well-moulded, with only a few mould lines easily removed by scraping, and there were no quality issues with the one I got. I haven’t used the brass turned bits yet – I might save them for use with the Forgeworld earthshaker cannon artillery carriage (if I ever get around to buying one), because they’re really really nice.

In conclusion: definitely worth it for 40k basilisk ammo.
